South West Trains runs a frequent service to Ascot from both Reading and London Waterloo. The average journey time is 27 minutes from Reading and 52 minutes from Waterloo. Regular services also run from Guildford. The railway station is a seven-minute walk from the racecourse.

What does The Queen do at Ascot? Each day of the week begins with the Royal Procession, when The Queen and accompanying Members of the Royal Family arrive along the track in horse-drawn landaus. They then spend the day watching the races from the Royal Enclosure.

There are four different Enclosures (viewing areas) at Ascot Racecourse – The Royal Enclosure, The Queen Anne Enclosure, The Village Enclosure and The Windsor Enclosure.

The centrepiece of Ascot’s year is held in June: Royal Ascot is arguably the world’s most famous race meeting, steeped in history dating back to 1711. The royal family attend the meeting, arriving each day in a procession of horse-drawn carriages from Windsor Castle through the great park and the village of Cheapside.

Whilst not named at the time, the Royal Enclosure was arguably conceived in 1822 when a two-storey building was constructed with its own lawn and admission was by invitation of the King. The best day for the racing purist, Tuesday sees the curtains open on a spectacular five days at Royal Ascot.

It also stages important throughout the winter months. The Royal Meeting held each June, remains a major draw, its highlight being The Gold Cup. The most prestigious race is the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes run over the course in July.

Every day of the Royal Ascot meeting – from Tuesday to Saturday – is attended by The Queen and members of the royal family.
