In the old days, parents whose children were born deaf were often unaware that anything was amiss until the child was, say, 3 years old. Deaf babies are exceptionally good at fooling their parents. They cry and babble just like hearing infants do, since these instinctive behaviors don’t depend on hearing.

Recently, the headline for one of my columns used the term “the hearing impaired” to refer to people with hearing loss. The National Association for the Deaf, for example, is OK with the use of “hard of hearing,” while the Hearing Loss Association of America recommends “people with hearing loss.”

Signs and symptoms of hearing loss may include:

• Muffling of speech and other sounds.
• Difficulty understanding words, especially against background noise or in a crowd.
• Trouble hearing consonants.
• Frequently asking others to speak more slowly, clearly and loudly.
• Needing to turn up the volume of the television or radio.

Deaf children are no different. All babies and children are pre-programmed to listen and talk. Deaf babies and children are pre-programmed to listen and talk.

The vocalisations of babies give clues about what they can hear. Some babies quieten down and concentrate when their hearing aids are first turned on each day; others become noisier as they test their aids. Older children may make a wider variety of sounds when wearing their hearing aids.

After one month of her birth a child who is not deaf and dumb makes different voices of crying for different causes. She feels pleasure in having her voice originated from the throat and generating echo sounds. Babbling sounds After five months a child who is not deaf and dumb is able to recognize her family members.

A cry is a sign that shows that the lungs of your baby are fit for breathing. If your baby doesn’t start crying immediately, it isn’t necessarily a cause for worry. Many babies are born healthy, in pink and quite alert with limb movements and all, and might begin to cry a few minutes later.

If the infant does not cry or breathe well in response to drying and stimulation, the umbilical cord must be cut and clamped immediately and the infant must be moved to the resuscitation area. Dry to stimulate breathing in all infants immediately after delivery.

Once your little one is born, however, the cord is no longer needed. Shortly after birth, it will be clamped and cut off. There are no nerve endings in your baby’s cord, so it doesn’t hurt when it is cut.

“Umbilical cords were intended to be buried because this “anchors the baby to the earth” (Knoki-Wilson, 8/10/92). Baring the umbilical cord in the Earth establishes lifelong connection between the baby and the place.

However, fathers who insist on cutting the umbilical cord can still take part in the birthing process. Cord blood collection occurs after the baby is born and the umbilical cord is cut, meaning the dads can still do their part in welcoming their little ones into the world.

Cut the Umbilical Cord If the momma pup doesn’t chew through each umbilical cord on her own, you will have to cut the cord. If you do, be sure to use sterilized scissors, cut about an inch from the pup’s belly, and tie the cord off with the thread or dental floss 1/4 to 1/2 inch from the puppy’s body.
