The Two Most Common Phrases. The two most common Cantonese phrases for saying sorry are 對唔住 (deoi3 m4 zyu6) and 唔好意思 (m4 ho2 ji3 si3). They’re applicable to a wide range of circumstances, so learning how to use them to say sorry in learning Cantonese is vital.

I use ‘yes’ if I have eaten regardless of whether the question was posed in the positive or negative. My reply to the negative question might be more emphatic (by stressing have). Have you eaten? Yes, I have.

밥 먹었어요? (bap meogeosseoyo?) Therefore, to show your concern for someone’s well being, you’d ask if they had eaten. While Korea has an abundance of food now, the phrase has still carried on as a greeting to show concern for other people you know.

Korea is a polite society; be appreciative and it will go a long way. If you feel confident in your Korean, you can say ‘jal meokkessumnida’ (잘 먹겠습니다 ) before the meal — similar to the Japanese itadakimasu, it roughly translates to ‘I will eat well’.
