Population. Religion in Yemen consists primarily of two principal Islamic religious groups: 53% of the Muslim population is Sunni and over 45% is Zaidi Shia, according to the UNHCR. Others put the numbers of Shias at 55%.

Yemenis are mainly of Arab ethnicity. When the former states of North and South Yemen were established, most resident minority groups departed. Yemen is still a largely tribal society. In the northern, mountainous parts of the country, there are some 400 Zaidi tribes.

Turkey is the first country which recognized Turkmenistan on 27 October 1991 following the dissolution of the USSR and to open its Embassy in Ashgabat on 29 February 1992. Turkey also supports Turkmenistan’s permanent neutral status.

In Turkmenistan, the state actively privileges a form of traditional Islam. That is, the leadership mobilizes the faith in its construction of a post-Soviet, national Turkmen identity. Yet, Turkmenistan is an officially secular country with constitutional provisions for the separation of state from religion.
