The Group 2: Language acquisition (previously Second Language) subjects of the IB Diploma Programme consist of the nearly 80 additional languages offered and may be studied at the following levels: B (SL or HL), or ab initio (SL only). Latin and Classical Greek are also offered and may be taken at SL or HL.

Language ab initio (SL) The language ab initio course is a language acquisition course for students with no prior experience of the target language, or for those students with very limited previous experience.

IB French is discussion-based, relies heavily on student interaction, and promotes intercultural awareness and understanding. IB French (Higher Level) spans grade 11 and 12 and enables French Immersion students to continue developing their French Language skills while also studying French works of Literature.

Mathematics Higher Level (HL) is a two-year course offered by the International Baccalaureate (IB) and is one of the Group 5 (Mathematics and Computer Science) courses for the IB Diploma Programme. The Standard Level (SL) mathematics courses are Mathematical Studies SL, Mathematics SL, and Further Mathematics SL.

Relatively, HL math is less “difficult” than a traditional Calculus course because it does not go into as much depth as would the traditional course. However, there is one large caveat: HL math should look at the relationship of math to your other IB courses.

Thanks Bondgirl, His Maths teacher has now confirmed that the IB higher Maths is harder than A level Maths. I didn’t expect an answer at the weekend, though! So, in theory, universities should adjust their requirements accordingly.

Do universities prefer A-Levels or IB? In short UK universities recognise both qualifications equally. Whilst the A Level may be more common in UK schools, UK universities appreciate the depth of study, development of independent research skills and academic rigor of the IB Diploma.
