He felt very glad to see the daffodils flower which was beside the lake. The flowers were dancing in by the wind. So the poet was happy but he suddenly became very sad or pensive and vacant mood because he faced many bad situations in his past life. He was thinking very much about those times. So he was sad.

When he is in a pensive mood, the image of golden daffodils flashes before him and changes his mood. When the poet lies on his couch in a contemplative mood, the image of dancing daffodils flashes before him, he is filled with happiness. Thus, the very thought of being in the lap of nature uplifts the spirit.

The poet was ‘lonely’ when he was wandering about “o’er vales and hills”. The first line of the poem states “I wandered lonely as a cloud” which indicates that the poet is by himself. He was ‘lonely’ as he wandered about “o’er vales and hills” where he spots the daffodils.

William Wordsworth’s piece “Daffodils” is presented in a fairly simple form. Consisting of four stanzas with six lines each, this twenty-four line poem exemplifies the iambic tetrameter style (four beats of an unstressed syllable followed by one beat of a stressed syllable).

Sestet. A six-line stanza, or the final six lines of a 14-line Italian or Petrarchan sonnet. A sestet refers only to the final portion of a sonnet, otherwise the six-line stanza is known as a sexain.

A poetic unit of three lines, rhymed or unrhymed. Thomas Hardy’s “The Convergence of the Twain” rhymes AAA BBB; Ben Jonson’s “On Spies” is a three-line poem rhyming AAA; and Percy Bysshe Shelley’s “Ode to the West Wind” is written in terza rima form.

If you know in advance that you want to write your poem in tercets, you can simply begin writing and thinking in three line units. Or you might write a twelve line poem with no stanza breaks and later divide it into four tercets, or three quatrains, or six couplets.

A line break is the termination of the line of a poem and the beginning of a new line. The process of arranging words using lines and line breaks is known as lineation, and is one of poetry’s defining features.

As with narrative, there are “elements” of poetry that we can focus on to enrich our understanding of a particular poem or group of poems. These elements may include, voice, diction, imagery, figures of speech, symbolism and allegory, syntax, sound, rhythm and meter, and structure.

A line is a subdivision of a poem, specifically a group of words arranged into a row that ends for a reason other than the right-hand margin. Just about every poem in the Archive has lines (prose poems can be argued over – they either don’t have lines, or have really long lines).

Poetry can be arranged in stanzas, which are considered “strophic,” or in lines, which is considered “stichic.” A stanza is set apart by using spaces above and below to indicate an individual unit.

Use a slash to indicate the end of a line of poetry when you quote two or three lines within a paragraph. If the quotation is longer than three lines, indent it, omit the quotation marks, and single space each line of the poem.
