After the Revolutionary War, the United States gained control of large sections of frontier land to the west of the 13 colonies. At first this frontier land was organized into large territories such as the Northwest Territory. Over time, many of these territories became states such as Kentucky, Tennessee, and Ohio.

• 1803: Louisiana Purchase. Napoléon Bonaparte didn’t just have a huge impact on Europe, he also altered the course of history in the New World as well.
• 1819: Adams–Onís Treaty.
• 1845: Texas Annexation.
• 1848: Mexican Cession.
• 1867: Alaska Purchase.

To change a boundary between two existing states, state governments of the two states would have to both agree, probably by each passing suitable legislation, and then ask Congress to make it official. This is occasionally settled by Congress or by the Supreme Court.

In traditional Chinese society, the elderly used to live with one of their children. But today more and more young adults are moving out, leaving their elderly parents alone. Experts say family-based care is now impractical because most middle-aged children have little time to take care of their parents.
