Award-winning stage and screen actress Janet Wright, the frank-talking and resilient comedy star best known for her portrayal of the long-suffering matriarch on Corner Gas, died Monday in Vancouver at the age of 71. No cause of death was released. Her death was confirmed by CTV, which aired the long-running sitcom.

“Corner Gas” star and creator Brent Butt has declared that the pumps are closed as his hit comedy is ending its highly successful run on CTV. “I didn’t want the show to go too long,” Butt told Seamus O’Regan during an interview on CTV’s Canada AM.

Corner Gas is a Canadian television sitcom created by Brent Butt. The series ran for six seasons from 2004 to 2009. Re-runs still air on CTV, CTV2, CTV Comedy Channel, Much, MTV, OLN and are streaming on Amazon Prime and Crave.
