14 companies you didn’t realize Disney owns. The Walt Disney Company is a massive corporate enterprise and media empire. ESPN, ABC, Lifetime, History, A&E, and FX are owned by Disney.

In an industry that has only one monopoly firm rather than lots of small competitive firms, three socially harmful things occur: The monopoly’s output is produced less efficiently and at a higher cost than the output produced by a competitive industry.

It can bring price stability to the market. Although the consumer prices in an oligopoly are often higher than what they would be under regular competition levels, a society can experience significant price stability benefits because of the actions of each organization.

In October, 20th Century Fox Television, a small-screen studio that Disney bought as part of the deal, became part of a new entity, Disney Television Studios. Mr. Murdoch still owns the Fox broadcast network, Fox News and a chain of 28 local Fox television stations, among other media assets.

Disney wants Fox’s business to create a larger suite of movies, television shows, and sports, as it invests in its own online streaming platforms to compete with Netflix and Amazon.

Disney’s recently acquired 20th Century Fox TV studio is the latest to have the “Fox” name dropped, with the company announcing today that it’ll be rebranding the studio to just 20th Television, as part of a larger rebrand for all of Disney’s TV studios.
