“La bise”, the French double-cheek-kissing upon greeting someone, is more than a social convention. This is why arms are always raised when doing la bise, to offer each other a sign of peace and show that one is unarmed. With another person who is not part of your family, it is a matter of trust.

The key is to take note of these little cultural differences. When you’re talking to a French person and especially if you’re in France, always be mindful of the following reminders. Making a fist with one hand and slapping the top of it with your other hand is considered rude.

What the researchers found, predictably, is that over two-thirds leaned to the right when kissing. But what they found that was novel was that kiss recipients tend to match their partners’ head-leaning direction, and those who initiated the kiss tended to do so based on whether they were right-handed or left-handed.

The Dutch Cheek Kiss In the Netherlands it is considered quite normal for Dutch people to greet each other with three kisses on the cheek. It is also custom to do the same again when saying good bye. It’s just a friendly way of saying hello and farewell. It’s not limited to the Dutch either.

Kiss on the lips: implies passion, may mean “I love you” or “I want to date you.” If it is carried out very quickly, just barely touching one another’s lips, it may mean simply friendship. Kiss on the ears: this gesture is charged with passionate sexual intention and power.

Why Serbs Kiss Three Times on the Cheek One speculation is that it’s connected with the Orthodox religion and the Holy Trinity. The same custom is maintained in Montenegro, Northern Macedonia and Russia. Other times, we just hug and kiss once, or shake hands. But adults will never kiss twice.

As far as kissing on lips is to be considered, it shows a form of intimacy but if you two are comfortable with it then it is completely ok. It can be done to show affection but neither of you should get a wrong idea about the other person regarding the intimacy. It’d be just an act of affection.

“Is kissing a woman on the cheek considered sexual harassment?” All by itself and with no forcing of oneself into the other’s private space, it’s not sexual harassment. If one has leaned in for a hug and a pat and the other sneaks in a cheek kiss, it isn’t. It’s just inappropriate.

Five kisses
